Woolmer faces investigation

12 April 2012

Pakistan coach Bob Woolmer on Wednesday faced a tribunal investigating doping charges against fast bowlers Shoaib Akhtar and Mohammad Asif.

Woolmer, team trainer Murray Stevenson and physiotherapist Darren Lifsun attended the meeting in Lahore to discuss the cases of Shoaib and Asif, who failed drug tests on the eve of Pakistan's first match in the ICC Champions Trophy in India.

The two pacemen were in attendance as the trio gave their version of events to a panel led by prominent lawyer Shahid Hamid.

Both bowlers have said they will not challenge the results of their positive tests for nandrolone carried out in a WADA (World Anti-doping Agency) laboratory in Malaysia, and declined to have their B samples examined.

Shoaib and Asif could be hit with a two-year ban, the minimum for a first offence under ICC doping rules.

However, the Pakistan Cricket Board said it will make its own decision on any punishment, since the tests were conducted internally.
