Wright: It's been blown out of all proportion

13 April 2012

Queens Park Rangers owner Chris Wright said today the merger with Wimbledon was still "just the germ of an idea" but claimed that it made financial sense.

The millionaire cast doubt on whether it will go ahead when he said: "It's been blown out of all proportion."

But he added: "From a financial standpoint there are some reasons why a merger of the two clubs would be the best thing.

"Let's face it, football out-side the Premiership now is in a difficult situation. The majority of clubs, if not all of them, outside the Premier-ship are losing money.

"Wimbledon have got a decent squad of players and are still in the First Division but they don't have a ground and a decent fan base.

"We have a bigger fan base and a decent stadium but we have been relegated to Division Two.

"The idea was that if you put the two together you get a well-financed, well-funded team playing in blue-and-white hoops in the First Division with a good chance of getting back into the Premiership.

"I've had five years here and it's not been an easy time with three seasons fighting relegation and one in which we were relegated.

"It's extremely wearing and I'm not as young as I used to be. I think that the club would be better off in the hands of a younger person with new ideas and a fresh impetus.

"I've been trying to find someone like that. I would dearly like to find that individual and sooner rather than later."
