Zola believes fitness is key as he looks to hammer home his ideas at West Ham

Gianfranco Zola's first task as manager has been to make the team fitter and meaner.

The Italian saw his new charges lose 3-2 at West Bromwich last weekend and was unimpressed with their conditioning.

EastEnders:  Zola and Clarke are looking to improve fitness levels at Upton Park

Zola said: 'I was surprised. Probably if the team were not tired we wouldn't have lost that game. The last 20 minutes they went down physically and you lose attention.

'We are looking at things defensively, but also the passing.'

New assistant manager Steve Clarke is key to the changes. Clarke has been replaced at Chelsea by Ray Wilkins.

The former England midfielder will have minimal input in training and his £400,000-a-year job will mainly involve research on opposition teams and a media role.
