One day after the official announcement that Jenna Coleman would be leaving BBC sci-fi series Doctor Who, her character Clara Oswald has seemingly been killed off.

In a shocking scene in the opening episode of Series 9, Oswald appeared to be vapourised by a Dalek while attempting to escape into the Doctor’s TARDIS space (and time) ship.

Coleman has portrayed the Doctor’s assistant for three years, initially joining Matt Smith on the show, before he left and was replaced by Peter Capaldi.

Despite being killed on-screen, the time-twisting nature of the classic long-running sci-fi series means that Oswald isn’t necessarily gone for good – at the end of the episode, the Doctor travels back in time to seemingly murder Davros, the inventor of the Daleks, intent on changing the course of history and bringing Clara back.

However, the cliffhanger ending means that we won’t find out if the Doctor succeeds in his plan until next week.

Eagle-eyed viewers will also have noted that various scenes featuring Oswald in the full series trailer did not appear in the opening episode – so there’s a good chance that she’s not done with quite yet.

Let the speculation begin about whether that death scene was for real, and if not, plenty of discussions about how Clara will make her glorious comeback.
