Gaffney shock at Bushtucker Trial

5 April 2012

Former EastEnder Dean Gaffney faced his first full day today as a contestant on I'm A Celebrity...Get Me Out Of Here!

He was voted into the reality TV show last night and immediately forced to face a live Bushtucker Trial.

Gaffney won the viewers' vote to join his fellow celebs in the jungle, ahead of ex-Emmerdale star Malandra Burrows.

But instead of walking straight into the camp, Gaffney, who played Robbie Jackson in the BBC soap, was met by presenters Ant McPartlin and Declan Donnelly and told he had been picked for the latest trial - dubbed the Bush Spa.

Asked how he felt about joining the show, the actor said: "I'm very pleased, I just walked in here, I don't know what going on. It's surreal."

But he looked shocked as Ant and Dec described his trial and revealed he had already been sick.

The star faced a series of "beauty treatments", including a "shampoo" in which he had to lean his head back into a bowl of cockroaches, while grasping wildly for a star.

As he asked if the challenges were going to get worse, Gaffney was made to put his hands into boxes of creepy crawlies and climb into a box filled with rats.

"Oh please, oh please, it's rats!" he screamed as he was allowed out again.

In total Gaffney collected nine stars to feed the camp.

Afterwards he said: "I feel good, but I'm still overwhelmed."

Earlier yesterday, former BBC newsreader Jan Leeming's flirtation with fellow contestant Toby Anstis, who is half her age, became the talk of the camp.

The 64-year-old perched herself on the edge of the DJ's bed while fishing for compliments from the 35 year old.

And she lapped up the DJ's stories about how he had a crush on her when she was on TV.

Anstis told her: "You used to come into our living rooms every day. I've said in every interview I have done that I was excited to be going into the jungle with you."

"Really?" said a flirty Leeming, even though she knew of the crush already.

To her delight, Anstis then told her that he was going to take her to a Lionel Richie concert when they left the jungle: "There is still a little girl in you", he said, to which she agreed: "Yes there is."

Later, fashion designer Scott Henshall, 31, said he thought Leeming secretly fancied Anstis.

He said: "I think she does have a soft spot for Toby. I think she does secretly fancy him."
