Following last night's dazzling show, the next group of celebrity dancers took to the floor earlier this evening for the second live instalment of this year’s Strictly Come Dancing.

And whilst there were many solid performances throughout the night, it was arguably the men who provided the most entertainment – at both ends of the results table.

TV presenter/singer Peter Andre’s Tango was a hit with the judges – ‘overflowing with attitude’ said Len Goodman – earning him 30 points; the highest score so far. Most surprisingly, he even received a glowing report from renownedly hard to please judge Craig Revel Horwood, who said of Andre's dance: ‘You rocked it, darling.’

Other male performers fared less well. Journalist Jeremy Vine was subjected to a torrent of criticism from Revel Horwood, who told him his Cha-cha-cha would qualify for the Dad Dancing Championships – ‘held annually, darling, in Devon,’ the judge quipped, ‘so maybe you should move there?’

Similarly, athlete Iwan Thomas was pulled up for his ‘lumpy’ Tango, and told by judge Bruno Tonioli that he had plodded through it: ‘like an oxen [sic] under a heavy load.’

In the female camp, however, came excellent performances from Coronation Street star Georgia May Foot and Radio 3 presenter Katie Derham, the latter of who was also praised by Revel Horwood. ‘The most sophisticated and stylish jive I think we’ve ever had,’ he said.

If anything was clear from tonight’s show, it’s that this is going to be a close competition.

And so it's all eyes on next weekend, when the public get to have their say in the first week of voting.
