X Factor hopeful Lauren Murray has revealed that she spent time in a psychiatric unit following the death of her father, Haider.

Murray, 25 – who is being mentored by Rita Ora – was only 11-years-old when he died and said she still takes antidepressants.

Speaking to OK! she said: "I’m still on antidepressants. People are shocked as I’m bubbly but it’s something I’ll have to deal with my whole life."

The dental receptionist from North London said she entered the ITV competition for her mother, who suffers with mental health issues.

"I’m doing this for my mum,” she said. "I wanted to prove to everyone – but especially her – that no matter what happens in your life you can achieve things if you work hard."

Murray has remained a popular contestant with the judges with Cowell describing her as a “great, great singer” after her rendition of Ariana Grande's One Last Time on Saturday night’s show.

Speaking about her mentor Ora, she said the pair are close but she does not like to discuss her personal life too much.

"I’m open, but I don’t just go around telling everybody,” she said. “Rita’s a great mentor but our relationship isn’t like that.

"I don’t want people to think I’m trying to win votes through sympathy."

X Factor returns to ITV on Saturday at 8pm.
