The Eurovision Song Contest is taking place in Ukraine’s capital city of Kiev this year, with counties including Poland, Belgium and Italy all vying for the coveted trophy.

As the competition draws closer, the anticipation for the annual musical extravaganza is hotting up. Here’s everything you need to know about this year’s singing spectacular:

What happens in the final?

Each of the final 26 entries will perform their song, after which each country gives two sets of scores ranking their pick of acts from one to eight, 10 and 12.

One set of points comes from a jury of five industry professionals, and the other set will be collected from viewers’ votes.

Countries aren’t allowed to vote for themselves and viewers can vote by phone, text and through the official Eurovision app.

Who is Lucie Jones?

The 25-year-old Welsh singer will be representing the UK in this year’s Eurovision Song Contest. She has plenty of talent show experience having made the live finals of the X Factor in 2009.

Selected back in March, Lucie impressed the public with her song Never Give Up On You during the BBC selection show.

What are Lucie Jones’ chances of winning?

She’s currently sixth favourite to win the competition. Italy’s Francesco Gabbani (who performs with a man dressed as a gorilla) is tipped to win, while Portugal’s more serious act Salvador Sobral is second favourite.
