Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has set Manchester United the challenge of winning their remaining five Premier League games to be certain of a top four finish.

United are currently on a 16-game unbeaten run and will move to within a point of fourth-placed Leicester if they beat Aston Villa on Thursday night.

Solskjaer believes it will have to be a perfect run-in to secure Champions League qualification.

He said: “You never know what’s going to happen, but it looks like teams around us are playing well.

“There are so many games. If you win every single one we’re in the top four. We cannot rely on help from anyone else.

“We have to do it ourselves and go into next season to put other challenges into teams.”

Solskjaer is targeting a title challenge next season and has told his players their current unbeaten run is not enough to match the club’s ambitions.

He added: “As a footballer you know you can’t just pick out confidence from the fridge. You have to have it every day in training and results matter.

"The last 16 games unbeaten gives us confidence, but it’s nowhere near what a Man United team should stride towards. If we focus on the next one then suddenly you’re stood there with 16 and that’s what we’ve done.”
