Drivers were today stuck in seven miles of traffic during the evening rush hour after a serious accident closed part of the M25.

A crash and an oil spill in Hertfordshire have lead to gridlock on the anti-clockwise section of the motorway between Potters Bar and Waltham Cross.

Commuters reported being stuck in traffic for hours as they battled to get home.

Pictures on social media showed frustrated drivers getting out of their cars after becoming stuck in miles of tailbacks.

A Highways England spokesman said drivers were experiencing delays while road workers cleared an oil spill following the collision.

He said: "A road traffic collision resulted in the rupture of an HGV fuel tank leaving a large amount of diesel on the carriageway.

"It is currently expected that lanes will start to reopen during the peak traffic period but congestion may continue throughout evening peak hours."

She added that drivers should consider planning alternate routes or allow extra time for their journey.

Drivers have been advised to follow the Hollow Square diversions and to rejoin the M25 at Junction 23.

Disgruntled drivers have taken to social media in their droves to complain about the situation.

Flick Harrington wrote: "I was stuck on the M25 and the roads around for five hours. Whoever spilt that oil on the M25 I hate you."

Driver Rich Nairn even reported losing work due to the traffic.

He wrote: "First time in 20 years I've had to pass a gig onto another caricaturist due to traffic. UK roads, particularly the M25 are an embarrassment."

Some hungry drivers even enquired about receiving a takeaway on the road.

Paul Wallace wrote: "Do you think Deliveroo could deliver to my car stuck on the M25? Probably best they come via moped."

The Highways spokesman added that the road was reopened at 7.20pm.
