Twitter has been plagued by technical difficulties with many users experiencing the website running incredibly slowly and other unable to access the site at all.

Users reacted with horror after the social media site went down on Friday evening.

The site appeared to crash at around 8.30pm on Friday, leaving people unable to send tweets.

A message on the website read: "Something is technically wrong. Thanks for noticing—we're going to fix it up and have things back to normal soon."

Many took to the UK's other big social networking site, Facebook, to report the problems with the site.

Amanda Ross said: "Twitter is down and I feel empty inside because I can't tweet about it."

While William Stewart wrote: "Twitter is down so I just want to say helLO frOM THE OTHER SIDEEE)all seriousness though, I've came out my cave until Twitter is back up. How's life people? anything interesting happening?"

And Rose Jacobs said: "I think Twitter is down. I am the queen of twitter. This is not okay."

The site was back up and running for some users around twenty minutes later, although some were still experiencing problems.

A Twitter spokeswoman said: "Some users may have recently experienced issues accessing Twitter on mobile & web. The issue has now been resolved."
