Meghan Markle and Prince Harry’s wedding bishop Michael Curry has undergone surgery for prostate cancer.
The clergyman delivered a rousing speech at the Royal wedding in May this year about the power of love.
It has been announced by the Episcopal Church that Rev Curry had surgery performed on Tuesday.
The 65-year-old announced his cancer diagnosis last week and said he planned to have surgery to remove the prostate gland.
He said he is expected to spend four to six weeks recuperating, but said he would resume his duties as presiding bishop of the church in early September.
Speaking earlier this year, after announcing his diagnosis, Rev Curry said: “I am happy to say the prognosis looks very good and quite positive. I have spoken with several others who have gone through this, and who have offered both encouragement and helpful advice. I will be in the hospital for at least a day, then at home to recuperate."
He added: “I am very blessed with a wonderful family, a first-rate medical team, a great staff, dear colleagues and friends, a calling to which I have given my life, and above all a good, great and loving God in whose hands we always remain.
“So, do say a prayer. And know that I look forward to being back at my post in September.”
Rev Curry is the first black leader of the Episcopal Church in the United States and preached about “power” and “love” at Meghan and Harry’s wedding.
