Star Wars is on track to become the most successful film of all time.

After over-taking films including Furious 7 and The Avengers, The Force Awakens now looks set to topple Avatar from the top spot in the US.

The gift that keeps on giving for Disney became the fourth highest-grossing film of all time on Monday, having made $742.3 million in North America and $1.54 billion globally.

Despite having been open in cinemas for just three weeks, the JJ Abrams-directed film made an estimated $88 million in the US last weekend alone.

The film is now sitting just behind Jurassic World, Titanic and Avatar in the global list of highest-grossing films of all time.

Another major push for the global box office should come when the film opens in China later this month.

Over in the UK, The Force Awakens is nearing the top spot after over-taking Avatar and Spectre this week.

Having grossed £97.6 million just a matter of weeks after being released, it looks certain to surpass Skyfall, which made £102.9 million when it opened back in 2012.
