She will soon be seen making her acting debut in a BBC period drama — but the 19-year-old daughter of Uma Thurman and Ethan Hawke has another project planned: penning a comedy about abortion.

Maya Hawke will star in the BBC1 adaptation of Louisa May Alcott’s 1868 classic Little Women, which is due to air near Christmas.

She is pictured on the cover of Tatler with co-star Jonah Hauer-King — the son of Jeremy King, one half of the duo behind The Ivy, Le Caprice and The Wolseley restaurants.

Hawke, who is dyslexic, said Little Women was important to her as it was “the first book I ever read cover to cover by myself”.

She was raised and still lives in New York, where she studied at The Juilliard School.

She described her first attempt at screenwriting as “a female comedy about abortion”.

Hauer-King plays Little Women’s romantic hero, Laurie, opposite Hawke as Jo. The former Eton student read philosophy and theology at Cambridge before deciding to concentrate on acting.

The full shoot can be seen in the January issue of Tatler, on sale on Monday
