Incoming Arsenal signing Matt Turner sends warning to Aaron Ramsdale over starting spot

USA TODAY Sports

Matt Turner has warned Aaron Ramsdale that he is coming for his starting spot when he joins Arsenal.

The USA international is set to finalise a move to the Gunners which was first agreed in February, having seen out the last few months with current club New England Revolution in Major League Soccer.

Turner has been signed to be Ramdale's understudy but the goalkeeper is not ready to settle for a backup role for long.

"I'd agree with it for now," he told Sky Sports. "I'm coming in to push him and become the best goalkeeper I can become, while also making him the best goalkeeper he can become. That's really my goal for it all."

Turner, who is a boyhood Arsenal fan, says Mikel Arteta has beeen on the phone with some advice head of joining. The transfer is expected to be finalised over the coming days.

"We've talked a little bit," Turner said when asked if he has spoken to Gunners boss Mikel Arteta. "His main message for me was just to focus on what I need to focus on right now, getting through these next few months, staying healthy, staying fit and getting ready for pre-season and compete.

"The project they have going on there, [I want to be] an important part of the locker room, adding some experience - not a ton of Premier League experience - but national team experience, league experience and playing games in pressured environments. I'll be an older head in the locker room, being 28."
