Arsene Wenger has ruled out a January move for Real Madrid's attacking midfielder Isco.

The 22-year-old has been linked with a move to Emirates Stadium in recent weeks and reports on Thursday suggested Wenger was set to lodge a sizeable bid for the Spaniard.

But the Arsenal boss has since rubbished talk he is in for Isco, insisting he is focused on reinforcing the squad with defensive additions.

Speaking at his press conference ahead of Stoke's trip to north London on Sunday, Wenger said: “No we are not on the case.

“We have plenty of creative players.

“We are short on the defensive side of our game not on the offensive side."

Lukas Podolski has already left the club in a loan move to Inter Milan and Yaya Sanogo is expected to complete a switch before the Februrary deadline

Crystal Palace and Hull City are reportedly interested in the striker and Wenger says the departures of two key frontmen underline his strength in depth in the final third.

He added: “We have plenty of offensive players, we just spoke about Podolski who went out on [on loan], we were just speaking about Sanogo going out because we have so many offensive players who don’t get a chance to play so we wouldn’t buy somebody else in the attack.”
