Fantasy Premier League tips: FPL gameweek 28 transfers, captain picks, differentials and bargains

Tom Doyle12 March 2021

Gameweek 28 of the Fantasy Premier League season has arrived, with plenty of FPL managers looking to bounce back for the season run-in.

After a bumper double gameweek 26 that promised so much and did not live up to expectations, rotation from Pep Guardiola left many frustrated in gameweek 27.

With an early FPL deadline at 6:30pm GMT on Friday March 12, here are some of the key players you should consider for your team - and perhaps think about handing the armband to…

Goalkeeper

Emi Martinez, Aston Villa (£5.4m)

The highest-scoring keeper this season has an excellent chance to pad his score with a trip to a Newcastle side struggling with injuries in attack. Captaining a keeper is always a risk, but you may be rewarded with a strong double-digit differential if you do.

Defender

Joao Cancelo, Man City (£6.2m)

Picking City players is a thankless task given Pep Guardiola’s rotation policy, but Cancelo was rested for Wednesday’s win over Southampton and is a near-certainty to start at Fulham. With Scott Parker’s men unlikely to sit back, Cancelo should get space on the ball to whip in some crosses for potential assists.

Lucas Digne, Everton (£6.2m)

Another highly-priced defender, though Digne plays more like a winger in Carlo Ancelotti’s system. Everton lost at Chelsea last time out, but a home tie against Burnley is the perfect chance to bounce back - and the wing-back could be crucial.

Matt Targett, Aston Villa (£5m)

Like Villa keeper Martinez, a chance of a clean sheet at Newcastle is high - and with three assists this term, Targett could add to that against a weakened Magpies side. A double-digit haul for a respectable price is on the cards.

Midfielder

Mo Salah, Liverpool (£12.5m)

Hear us out. The Egyptian has blanked in his last four League outings, but found the net with a clinical finish in the Reds’ 2-0 Champions League win over RB Leipzig on Wednesday.

Crucially, Jurgen Klopp shifted Fabinho back into midfield, and that gave the team more balance. The champions head to an inconsistent Wolves on Monday, and with plenty of FPL managers selling Salah given his price, this could be the game for him to bounce back.

Gareth Bale, Tottenham (£9.5m)

You wouldn’t have said this a few weeks ago, but Bale is in red-hot form and may still be going under the radar in terms of differential points given his price. He is likely to get at least one great chance against that Arsenal defence, and can also create from the flanks - so you could do a lot worse if you have some funds to spare.

Mason Mount, Chelsea (£7m)

Mount was given a rested for Chelsea’s 2-0 win over Everton, and Kai Havertz’s strong performance could give Thomas Tuchel pause for thought. Still, it’s unlikely Mount will miss two games in a row, and seems the ideal attacker given Leeds’ open style. A risk worth taking at that price.

Forward

Harry Kane, Tottenham (£11.4m)

Derbies are always tight affairs, but Kane is in sparkling form up against an Arsenal defence who keep making silly mistakes. Kane is both Spurs’ chief creator and scorer, scoring two and setting up two more against Crystal Palace last weekend, so anything good is likely to go through him.

There’s a slight injury doubt after a knock against Dinamo Zagreb, but you’d back him to pull through and trouble the Gunners’ back line - and it’s tough to look beyond him for captain, especially if your rivals have all gone the same way

Richarlison, Everton (£8m)

An exceptionally well-priced forward given his form and opponents Burnley, the Brazilian could fill his boots at Goodison Park.

Kelechi Iheanacho, Leicester City (£5.6m)

Iheanacho won’t have troubled too many teams this season, but has three goals in his last five outings and comes up against struggling Sheffield United this weekend. At that price, it’s tempting to sign him as a cheap second or third striker alongside Kane and bolster your squad elsewhere.
