Harry Kane praised Tottenham’s persistence as the 150th Premier League goal of his career sent Jose Mourinho’s side to the top-flight summit.

Spurs faced a competitive battle against winless West Brom on Sunday, with the visitors second best for much of the first half before a struggle to break down some stubborn defensive resistance after the interval.

However, Tottenham continued to pile on the pressure late at The Hawthorns and got their reward with two minutes left in the 90 as Kane headed Matt Doherty’s right-wing cross over the stranded figure of Baggies goalkeeper Sam Johnstone.

The England captain’s latest milestone came just three days after he hit the 200-goal mark overall for Spurs in the Europa League win over Ludogorets, with manager Mourinho commenting that it was just a “matter of time” before the “club legend” overtook the great Jimmy Greaves (266) as Tottenham’s all-time leading scorer.

Speaking to Sky Sports after his late winner in the Midlands, Kane said: “It was a good battle. In the second half we played better than the first...they (West Brom) were defending for their lives.

"It was about getting that breakthrough and thankfully I got a little header in there to make the 150.

"As the game opened up we created more chances, we just had to keep persisting and when you nick one with a few minutes left it's about defending that lead - and thankfully we did that.

"We're delighted with three points, we're top of the league and that's what our aim was coming into this game."

Tottenham’s one-point lead at the top of the Premier League - their first of any kind since August 2014 - could prove to be shortlived, however, with Leicester and Liverpool both able to overtake them on Sunday afternoon as they battle Wolves and Manchester City respectively.
