Adam Lallana is unlikely to play for Liverpool again, Jurgen Klopp has revealed.

The Englishman recently penned a short-term extension to his contract with the club, which was originally set to expire before the end of a season delayed by the coronavirus pandemic.

However, he has not featured in a Premier League matchday squad for the Reds since the competition’s enforced hiatus came to an end last month.

According to Klopp, a shared desire to protect the player’s next move means he will only be called upon in the remaining games if absolutely necessary.

And so Lallana is not expected to make a farewell appearance for the club before his six-year stay comes to a close later this month.

Klopp explained: “It’s clear that Adam will leave the club in the summer.

“Now you ask about him, I miss already everything about him in this moment and he’s still here!

“He’s an outstanding player, one of the most influential players on the training quality I ever had in my life.

"He’s a great professional but we have a difficult situation and we respect that a lot.

“Everything with Adam is sorted, let me say it like this, he’s training, everything is fine, but the future is his future.

"Yes, if we need his help on the pitch, we can get it - he’s there, he trains 100 per cent.

“But as long as we don’t need it, he will just train and I think that’s the normal thing.

“I think there were a lot of discussions about players with ending contracts, he was not even a discussion.

“It was clear that he would be extended and he wanted to do that as well, but we will not put any risk on his future or whatever.”

In anticipation of his departure, Klopp went on to lavish praise upon Lallana, a player whose role has diminished in recent seasons as a result of injuries and increased competition for places.

He continued: “He is one of the most important players of the time since I am here so I wish him only the best for future.

“From my point of view, he is already a legend here, but he can now start becoming a legend somewhere else from next season on.

“He had very important games for us, but what he did on the training ground was absolutely exceptional.

“The young players [when they] talk about the most important things that happened in their first two years, they will mention Adam Lallana, 100 per cent.

“Not only him, but him as well, because the way these guys train and the attitude they show in sessions, that is an example for all the others.”
