Mauricio Pochettino tells managers to 'help' referees following Arsene Wenger spats

Mauricio Pochettino says he trusts referees and that managers must let them do their jobs after Mike Dean waved away a penalty claim on Dele Alli in Tottenham's 1-1 draw with West Ham.

Two stunners from Pedro Obiang and Heung-min Son meant the spoils were shared at Wembley, but not before Alli appealed strongly for a spot-kick after a challenge from Winston Reid.

After a week in which Arsene Wenger could face multiple FA charges for taking on Premier League referees, Pochettino remained reticent on the subject.

“No, I haven't seen them,” the Spurs boss said when asked for his take on the incident. “But I trust in the referees and sometimes it's for you and sometimes it's against you. I'm going to say nothing. It's a difficult job for them.

“It's our responsibility to try to help and benefit the spectacle of the games and football. I think I need to be, we need to be, focused on trying to help our team try to win and score goals and improve our players to be focused on the decision of the referee. We must let them do their job.”

In the other dugout, West Ham manager David Moyes also remained on the side of the officials when quizzed on a potential foul on Manuel Lanzini in the build-up to Son’s spectacular leveller.

“No, no he wasn’t [fouled]," he said. "I thought he was at the time, I’ve seen it after and he was not.

“I think the biggest thing is the tackle did catch him, but it wasn’t a free-kick, but meant we were out of position slightly when Son struck the ball.

"To be fair we’d done a really good job in trying to restrict him or block them, fortunately, their shots were going over the top or wide at different times but I’ve got to say he scored a really good goal from distance.”
