QPR out to pip Everton in race for Spurs' Steven Pienaar

Queens Park Rangers are planning a late bid to beat Everton to the signing of Tottenham midfielder Steven Pienaar.

Spurs have made the South Africa international available for transfer and Everton are strong favourites to land him. Pienaar has already had two spells at Goodison Park, including being on loan there for the second half of last season.

But the two clubs have yet to agree a fee and Rangers are considering taking advantage of the situation.

Rangers manager Mark Hughes tried to sign Pienaar on loan last January only to lose out to Everton but he would be prepared to sign him on a permanent basis.

Spurs want around £5m for the 30-year-old (above), even though he cost them £2.5m when they bought him from Everton in January 2011.

Everton are still determined to sign Pienaar, especially after selling midfielder Tim Cahill to the New York Red Bulls but Spurs will sell only if their valuation is met, which has left QPR with a chance to purchase him.

Spurs continue their preparations for the new season with a match in Baltimore on Saturday against Liverpool, who were beaten 2-1 by Roma last night.

Charlie Adam scored Liverpool’s goal in Boston after Michael Bradley and Alessandro Florenzi were on target for the Italians.

Reds boss Brendan Rodgers said: “There were real positives in the game and this was just what we needed. Roma are ahead of us in their preparations.”
