Froch: I want to beat the best

12 April 2012

Carl Froch admits he jumped at the chance to enter the "unique" Super Six World Boxing Classic as he looks to become undisputed super-middleweight world champion.

The WBC champion defends his title against unbeaten American Andre Dirrell in his Nottingham hometown on Sunday night in the first fight of an exciting six-man tournament.

"It's the six best fighters in the world all fighting each other so it's a unique concept and something I'm looking forward to taking part in," Froch said.

"I've wanted the big fights since I was British champion. I cleaned up domestically and there was nothing left for me to do except get a fight with Joe Calzaghe and as soon as he retired I thought 'where do I go from here?'.

"So I went for the WBC belt and since I won that, I'm only interested in fighting the best. This tournament gives me the opportunity to fight the next best fighters in the world and that's all I want to do."

Froch continued: "The Super Six is unique in professional boxing because you don't usually get regular fights already in place.

"You're usually waiting around thinking 'who am I fighting next? Oh, he's retired, he's pulled out'. At least now I know my next three fights, minimum, are going to be Dirrell, Mikkel Kessler then Arthur Abraham, in that order."

While Froch made the 168lb weight limit comfortably at 167.4lbs, Dirrell was four ounces over.

After going away to sweat off the excess, however, the American tried again and was 167.5lbs upon his return.
