Italians approve safety measures

12 April 2012

Celtic's Champions League match against AC Milan could be moved to France or Switzerland after the Italian government approved new measures to combat football hooliganism - including the closure of those stadia which do not meet safety standards.

The measures, which also include a ban on fireworks and smoke bombs, are in response to the violent scenes at the Serie A Sicilian derby between Catania and Palermo, where a policeman died.

It is understood only six stadia in Serie A currently meet the required standard - the Stadio Olimpico in Rome, the Artemio Franchi in Siena, the Stadio Olimpico in Turin, Renzo Barbera in Palermo, Sampdoria's Luigi Ferraris and Messina's San Filippo.

Celtic were due to play at Milan's San Siro on March 7.

An announcement will be made by the FIGC on Thursday to confirm which stadia will be affected.

The minister of sport, Giovanni Melandri, said: "Those stadiums that do not meet our safety standards will not be open to fans."

Gianni Petrucci, president of the Italian Olympic Committee (CONI) expressed his hope that the measures would solve the problems facing football in the country.

"I want to thank the ministers for their quickness in facing the problems regarding the recent episodes of violence," he said.

"The decree announced tonight, of which we all have to adapt to, is the answer to the episodes that we have experienced in recent weeks.

"This decree should not be considered a punishment towards clubs and towards their presidents that invest so much money. I wish to thank them personally for the sacrifices they have done and will have to continue to do in the immediate future.
