Italy announce anti-violence measures

12 April 2012

The Italian government has announced a decree to combat hooliganism in football.

The key article among the 13 will see a ban of all spectators from those stadia not considered to have met security standards.

There will also be a ban on fireworks and smoke bombs in stadiums.

The decree was unanimously approved by ministers.

It is understood only six stadia in Serie A currently meet the required standard - the Stadio Olimpico in Rome, the Artemio Franchi in Siena, the Stadio Olimpico in Turin, Renzo Barbera in Palermo, Sampdoria's Luigi Ferraris and Messina's San Filippo.

An announcement will be made by the FIGC on Thursday to confirm which stadia will be affected.

The minister of sport, Giovanni Melandri, said: "Those stadiums that do not meet our safety standards will not be open to fans."
