Jose: 'Don't shoot yourself Steve'

14 April 2012

Jose Mourinho has urged Steve McClaren to ignore the hate mob trying to drive him out of the England job, telling him: "Don't shoot yourself."

The Chelsea manager watched his side come within seconds of blowing the title race at Watford on Saturday and then turned his attention to the plight of the England coach. Putting an imaginary gun to his head, Mourinho said: "Don't do it. We all belong to the same habitat. What happened to him tomorrow could happen to me and after tomorrow will happen to somebody else. That's our life.

"If we're not prepared for these difficult moments we have no chance. Our life is made of happy moments and bad moments. Now I'm going to have dinner. If I lose two points at Watford I have dinner exactly the same. I will not kill myself."

McClaren, who has escaped to San Francisco with his family after a torrid ten days with England, has vowed to fight on despite pressure from fans and the media and a lack of genuine support from his employers at the Football Association. In response to the supporters who vilified him during Wednesday's 3-0 win over Andorra, McClaren said: I won't let some hateful mob drive me out of this job. I have work to do and I'm not leaving until I've done it.

"I don't believe I will ever get abuse as bad as that again in my life. But when I look back on the experience, I feel I have emerged stronger."
