Leeds rally for victory

12 April 2012

Late tries from Danny Buderus and Lee Smith carried engage Super League champions Leeds to a hard-fought 24-14 win over Hull KR to go joint top of the table.

The Rhinos had trailed 14-6 early in the second half at Headingley after Rovers tries from Kris Welham and Ben Cockayne but Jamie Peacock began the fightback.

Buderus and Smith, who also kicked four goals, then went over in the final six minutes as the Rhinos edged a tight battle in difficult wet conditions.

Scott Grix claimed a second-half brace to give spirited Wakefield a first Super League victory at St Helens since 2003.

The Wildcats had lost their previous seven encounters on Merseyside but they dug deep to hold on for a hard-earned and ultimately deserved 22-20 success, despite being outscored by five tries to four.

Paul Wellens failed to convert any of his side's touchdowns and then missed a last-minute penalty that would have given his side a point as John Kear's men held on admirably.

Castleford further enhanced their impressive record on the road to end any remaining hopes Salford had of forcing their way into the play-off reckoning.

Two converted tries in the final nine minutes of the first half put Castleford in the driving seat as first Brett Ferres and then Michael Shenton went over to give the away side a 12-point lead.

Dean McGilvray gave the home side hope but Kirk Netherton crossed for the visitors and Stefan Ratchford's late effort had little bearing on the outcome of the game though as it proved a mere consolation.

Three late tries from Gareth Raynor, Mark Calderwood and Josh Cordoba helped struggling Hull scrape a 22-6 win over the Celtic Crusaders.
