McIlroy targets top 10

12 April 2012

Rory McIlroy is not content with being the top amateur at the Open Championship after setting his eyes on a top-10 finish.

The 18-year-old debutant struck a confident tone after shooting a two-over-par 73 on Saturday to lie four over for the championship.

"I want to play in this next year and the easiest way to do that is to finish in the top 10 this week," said the Northern Irishman, who was the only one of the field's six amateurs to make the cut.

He added: "That's what my mindset was: going out and just trying to play my best golf.

"To be sitting at plus four isn't too bad. If I can go out and shoot a score like Chris DiMarco did [66 for three under for the tournament] it's well within my reach."
