Sorensen wins Stage 12

12 April 2012

Nicki Sorensen broke clear late on from a long-time breakaway group of seven riders to win Stage 12 of the Tour de France.

The two-time national champion of Denmark, who rides for Saxo Bank, made his raid for glory with 5.5 kilometres remaining and could not be stopped.

Laurent Lefevre came home second, 48 seconds later, with Liquigas' Franco Pellizotti third.

The peloton, including yellow jersey holder Rinaldo Nocentini, finished around six minutes behind the front seven.

Britain's Mark Cavendish, who won the previous two stages of the Tour, keeps hold of the green jersey after finishing eighth in a mass sprint finish among the peloton.

It was Sorensen's maiden Tour win in his 10th year as a professional.
