The big battles

Standard Sport14 April 2012
Fernando Morientes v John Terry

The Real Madrid reject is the Champions League's leading light and the competition's top scorer was the difference between the sides. Morientes may have missed two good chances but created one goal with a magnificent header and scored the other after a superb one-two with Lucas Bernardi, a considerably greater contribution than his Chelsea counterparts. Roman Abramovich is in the market for a striker or two and could do worse than recruit the Spaniard, if only for his truly magnificent mullet.
Terry's commitment could not be doubted and he inspired his team throughout, but his defensive limitations-were exposed by the classy Morientes. Made a vital block on a shot by the Spaniard in the first half but was nowhere for the goal that sealed Chelsea's fate.

Flavio Roma v Carlo Cudicini

Cudicini watched in horror as Morientes's header looped beyond his reach for Ibarra's crucial goal on the stroke of half-time. The Italian was not solely to blame for either goal but showed inevitable signs of rustiness after being out for two months, particularly in his failure to stop Morientes's poorly struck equaliser. Roma, by contrast, prevented the home side establishing an unassailable first-half lead. The Italian's save from Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink and the wonderful diving effort that denied Frank
Lampard's well struck volley soon afterwards were exceptional and had they not been made the game could have taken a different course.

Jerome Rothen v Mario Melchiot

Chelsea have two left-wingers of considerable promise on their books in Damien Duff and Arjen Robben, but both would do well to study the performances of Jerome Rothen over the two legs.
The French midfielder was nothing less than outstanding in both games, combining the pace and trickery of Ryan Giggs with the crossing ability of David Beckham, not to mention a will to win that would shame Roy Keane.
The 25-year-old gave Mario Melchiot a torrid time throughout, toying with him in the build-up to the first goal, and if he continues to perform at a similar level he will make a huge impact at the European Championship. Duff take note.
