White out for season

12 April 2012

Salford winger Paul White will miss the rest of the season after aggravating a knee injury in the Reds' 48-12 defeat at Hull KR.

The 26-year-old former Huddersfield and Wakefield player, Salford's leading tryscoring in the National League last year, touched down for the game's first try after 64 seconds of his first appearance of the season before further damaging his knee.

Coach Shaun McRae said: "We have to wait a period of time for the inflammation to go down before he can have surgery. But it looks like he will need a full knee reconstruction, so we've seen the last of Paul for 2009."

White joins Willie Talau, the man signed from St Helens in the close season as his centre partner, on the long-term absentee list as recovers from an operation on his cheekbone and a tear to his tricep.

The loss of White could pave the way for promising youngster Eddie Vaughn to make his breakthrough in Super League.

The Warrington-born full-back or winger, signed as a 16-year-old through the Reds' Foundation, has started to train with the first team after catching the eye in the reserves.

Salford have some good news on the injury front, with scrum-half Richie Myler and winger Dean McGilvray shaking off knocks they picked up at Hull KR - and both could be available for Sunday's Carnegie Challenge Cup fourth-round tie at Hull.

Second rower Ian Sibbit should also be available as the Reds seek to halt a six-match losing run.
