Worst result in history: 31-0

13 April 2012

American Samoa took the unwanted title of the world's worst international football team today when they lost 31-0.

Their defeat in Australia in a World Cup qualifying match was the biggest ever in an international.

It beat the record set only 48 hours earlier when Australia beat Tonga 22-0.

Striker Archie Thompson beat keeper Nicky Salupu 13 times to break an 89-year-old scoring record.

The previous record of 10 goals was shared by Sofus Nielsen of Denmark, set against France in 1908, and Germany's Gottfried Fuchs who tormented Russia four years later.

England's biggest victory is a 15-0 win away to France in 1906.
